Beluga and the Human Ashtrays
- Mars Needs Women / High 'n' Tight 7" Howard Peluso HP380, 1979 RS/HS
In 1980 Epicycle momentarily became the backing band for Chicago
singer/performance artist Beluga. We did one show at a club called Tut's in
Chicago, recorded the single, and then Beluga did a performance art piece to
the recording at The Park West in the spring of 1980. I think the whole thing
was for some kind of charity if I remember correctly. I remember at the Tuts
show, Beluga gave an audience member a military style buzz cut with an electric
razor during the performance and we closed with The Monkees Theme Song... it
was pretty insane.[as told to RM]
Mars Needs Women is good artpunk. Most copies are sleeveless. A few have an
insert-style one-sided sleeve. One known copy in a hand-painted innersleeve
 signed by Beluga at bottom-left.[JF]

Punk/hardrock mix which is enjoyable but more tepid than the awesome picture
of the band would leave you to believe. It sounds more like the guy in the
bad tux at far left than the leather/biker dude at far right. Let The Kids
Play is the most punked-out track.[JF]

Luchs Brothers
- Kill Me I'm Rotten / Losing My Lunch Over You 7" Retread RRS0001, 1978 PS
- We Are Farmers And Comedians Too! 7" Retread RREP002, 1979 PS
(Bacon County Jail / Luchs Bros. On Parade // The Beer Belly Polka /
This Is A Test / Phone Calls To God / Rats Live On No Evil Star)
Kill Me I'm Rotten was written in 10 minutes after my first exposure
to the voice of Johnny Rotten, which I thought was one of the funniest
things I'd ever heard, and to which I wanted to pay some kind of
comedic homage. To this day, I'm amazed at how little press is
devoted to the humor of the Sex Pistols and how seriously everybody
takes punk. The idea that this man has made a living from singing all
these years is, to me, hilarious. Still, I'm a big fan and I've enjoyed
pretty much everything he's done. We soldiered on for a while with our
comedy shenanigans. Our second record was unfortunately a major
abortion, an attempt to combine songs with comedy bits, and it all
sounds pretty awful today except for one cut, Luchs Brothers On Parade,
which is nice but too long. I wouldn't stand by anything else on the
record except for the ingenious homemade packaging, which is based on
Chinese propaganda of the period, and includes things like a political
 playlet, etc.[Kurt Luchs]

Mentally Ill side-project experimental / no wave band. I think there's also
a split 12" not yet listed here. Nutron Baby on the second LP is the closest
they came to punk rock, sounding as if the Mentally Ill was an artpunk band
 with a sax player.[JF]
